Technology has been a pivotal aspect in our modern society for decades, making life easier through innovative products and improving our sources of entertainment. Whether it is a high tech smart phone with which an individual can perform the majority of their daily tasks from, or a computerized automobile that provides accurate GPS and miles per gallon estimates, technology has drastically come a long way, continuing to grow at a seemingly exponential rate.

Through the various advances in technology we have grown to appreciate, we are beginning to see it being utilized more often for environmentally friendly uses. Advances in technology are helping to contribute towards main areas of the environmentally friendly movement, pushing our society to a more sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure. There are many ways technology has helped contribute to the development of innovative, Eco-friendly products. However, there are a few that are extremely important.

Sustainable Energy

Advances in technology have helped open the door to finding and utilizing alternate sources of energy, the most widely known being the sun. However, methods such as computerized wind-mill systems and large and intricate methane run facilities have opened the door to a whole barrage of additional possibilities.

Fuel Efficient Vehicles

Technology has also provided the means to which automobile manufacturers produce more fuel efficient and longer lasting vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with advanced computer systems that maintain the engine of the vehicle, ensuring it receives the proper care.

Changes in Everyday Items

Household items such as the light bulb and television all incorporate technological advances that contribute to energy conservation. One of the best examples is the CFL light bulb. Also, thanks to satellite tv and even websites like www.direct.tv, we can be more educated about contributing to green home technology.

Ten years ago, when you recycled you only worried about where your paper, plastic and glass went. In recent years, recycling electronics has become just as popular as the traditional form of recycling.

Many computer and electronic users don’t think twice about recycling their old computer or MP3 players, but if they did would they know exactly what their electronics were being used for? The answer is probably not.

Here’s a look at some of the ways electronic recycling centers use recycled electronics.

Repair Parts

Some recycled electronics are used for their parts. Repair centers all over the world need bit parts from old electronics and these recycled items are the perfect place to get them. It is not uncommon for recycling centers to take out parts of a computer monitor or TV screen and ship those parts to electronic repair centers all over the world.

Olympic Medals

The 2010 Olympic Games set a standard for how the medals were created. While a portion of the medals did contain the standard gold, silver and bronze, all medals were made from a portion of recycled electronics that were compacted to form the medal substance.

Housing Decoration or Art Exhibits

Recycled electronics are a very popular choice for some interior designers or artists. Old computers, TVs and even VCRs have been used to create a stunning artistic display or vintage living room effect.

Repair parts, Olympic medals and decorations are just three examples of the dozens of possibilities of where your old electronics will end up after they have been recycled.

There can be many meanings to the environmentally-friendly act of recycling a computer. You can get rid of the computer in a proper way, or you can let someone else make good use of it. There are many toxic chemicals that go into making a computer or computer monitor. That is why it pays to know the many ways you can recycle your old computer.

1) Donate It

An old computer may be useless to you, but it could be important to someone less fortunate. Contact your local charitable organizations and ask about their computer donation programs. You may be eligible to write off your donation on your taxes while helping someone in need access the educational power of owning a computer.

2) Manufacturers

Many computer manufacturers have recycling programs available to general public. The companies use the old parts for repairs, and then make sure that the hazardous materials are disposed of properly. Contact the manufacturer of your new computer to see if they offer a program to help you legally dispose of your old one.

3) Recycling Centers

The recycling centers and scrap yards in your area offer computer recycling programs as well. The cost to recycle a computer is low, and in some cases it may even be free. All you need to do to remain green is get your old computers to the people that know how to dispose of them.

Recycling old computers is a great way to save the environment by doing the right thing. You may even be able to get a computer to someone who cannot afford one just by being environmentally conscious.

Ours is a consumer society. A disposable society some used to say. Buy a radio, have something go wrong with it and it was cheaper to buy a new one! At least that’s the way it used to be. But things are changing.

Recycling is becoming more and more acceptable, and not just plastics and metals that would otherwise end up in landfills but some things that we never imagined would be.

Did you know that about eighty percent of the components of the computer you are using to read this can be recycled! Actually that’s pretty good as the components are made up of some very toxic materials. Cars have been made to be recycled for at least the last twenty years. Some manufacturers use the fact that their cars are totally recyclable to sell them!

Computer are not immune to this advance as companies have looked for more and better ways of improving their products, the development of the internet and the possibility of upgrading your computer without leaving your house has become a major tool and advantage in that area.

As we have used up more and more of the Earth’s valuable resources people have found ways to use less and less of the harmful chemicals that used to be in every product!

The search for finding ways to use less and less of the Earth’s resources has led to some interesting things.

Today we are looking more than ever, why? Because the stakes are too high not to look! with nearly seven billion people using the finite resources we need to find better ways to use them.

It is important to think about saving the environment when purchasing computers and various computer related accessories. Many persons are very keen on duplex or two sided printing. However, they find it difficult to arrange the pages in the right manner before giving the right print instructions. The end result is that people end up printing on both sides of the paper only when they find it convenient to do so. Ideally, they should focus on printing on one side of the sheet only when it is unavoidable.

How can one focus on this important aspect and make computing experience environmentally friendly when purchasing a computer? Well, why not go in for a printer that that offers in built duplex printing? If you have such a device in your hand, the printer will take care of reversing the pages to ensure it gets printed on both sides. One just has to feed the paper and ensure that printing process is going on properly.

There was a time when people made use of a new sheet of paper every time they found a single mistake in a document. Today, they make use of the in built editing feature of word processors to make as many changes to the virtual copy before printing it on paper.

In the same way, consumption of paper in your home and office will come down drastically by going on for an automated process. What is more, each and every individual will be pleased that he or she can contribute to a greener earth. This is an efficient option to save time, energy, money and the environment.

In today’s day and age we are all taking important steps to go green and become more environmentally friendly. People everywhere are beginning to recycle and practice green living in hopes of making a difference in the world and a better future. Companies and businesses are also beginning to practice green living in the office. Here is a look at some of the ways they are cutting back and helping the environment.

Using Green Technology

One way that offices and businesses have started to live green is by using green technology and by practicing better office procedures. These new procedures include saving energy with safe software deployment practices. When a computer has the ability to run faster it is using less energy which is great for our earth. Other businesses and companies have begun to use less energy by buying more energy-efficient computers. Offices are also starting to power down more and are using more energy efficient lights as well.

Buying Recycled Computers and Office Equipment

Another way companies have begun to go green is by buying recycled computers and office equipment. While some businesses may scoff at the idea of buying used computers and equipment, it is actually a really good way to not only recycle, but save on money as well. There are many computers, printers, fax machines and other pieces of office equipment that are gently used or that have been refurbished that still have plenty of use left in them or are in like new condition.

If you want to help the environment, one of the ways you can do that is with eco-friendly laptops. When you’re about to purchase your new laptop, be sure to look for one that’s Energy Star certified. Also, consider finding one that’s using renewable energy to charge. Also, laptops overall use less electricity than desktop models, so you’re already ahead of the game by purchasing one. Not everyone thinks of a computer as being earth-friendly, mostly because they have to use electricity or battery power and they need to be charged up. They also use plastics and other synthetic materials for their casing and components. While you won’t be able to completely avoid these kinds of things, needing a laptop for work, school, or just to keep in touch with others isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Just take the time to look around at different laptops so you can decide which model you want. You may have a budget that you want to stick to, as well, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You can certainly enjoy a great eco-friendly laptop on a budget if you shop smartly. Wait for good sales, look around the stores and check online. Buy from a reputable retailer, and purchase a brand that you’ve heard of. Those simple things will help you get a great laptop at a great price and still be environmentally friendly. It’s hard to beat that when you want to enjoy a computer without any of the guilt that can come with models that use a lot of energy.
