Although you may be joining the green movement by planting a garden and buying energy-efficient appliances, you may not have thought about being more eco-friendly with your computer technology. As we continue to buy the latest electronic gadgets, it’s important to think about what we should do with the old ones. Here are just a few ways that you can go green with technology:
1. Recycle
It’s always green to recycle! If your old-to-you device is still functional, clean your personal files off the hard drive and donate it to a school or a charity. While you may not want it, there’s someone out there who would love to have it. If it no longer works, it probably contains a few parts that can be used to repair other machines. By giving your computer to an authorized recycler instead of tossing it into the landfill, you can make sure that everything reusable is removed and the rest is recycled in a safe manner.
2. Energy-Efficient Computers
Along the same lines as other energy-efficient appliances, many new computers and other electronic devices are much more energy efficient. In fact, the latest video cards are advertising how they use less energy and produce less noise and heat. With the growth in solid-state storage units, you can expect these devices to last longer and take less energy to run than their traditional counterparts.
3. Unplug When Not in Use
Computers and other electronic equipment are sometimes referred to as energy vampires. Even if you turn them off, they use a tiny bit of electricity at all times. By unplugging them in addition to turning them off, you’ll save the planet while reducing your electric bill. They’ll be safer in the event of power surges, too!
If you think about how you use technology, you can make a few simple changes to enjoy the electronic world while doing your best to contribute to the eco-friendly green movement.
